EVENTS PROGRAMME
The New English Art Club presents a series of special events to complement the NEAC Annual Exhibition 2024:
Exhibition Tours with Louise Balaam
Friday 14 June, 2pm and 3:30pm
Louise Balaam NEAC RWA will give guided tours of the exhibition throughout the afternoon.
Louise Balaam is an abstract landscape artist who lives and works in Kent. Her work is heavily inspired by an emotional response to the natural world. Her process is to draw outside, soaking up the experience of being in the environment, and then take that inspiration back to the studio to paint, aiming for a direct and intuitive response to the experience of being in the landscape.

Exhibition Tours and Sketching with Michael Weller
Saturday 15 June, 11am and 2pm
Michael Weller NEAC will be in the gallery all day where he will be giving exhibition tours and sketching.
Michael will do two tours of the exhibition, at 11am and 2pm. The remainder of the day Michael will be sitting in the cafe, drawing. Bring your sketchbook, BIC pens, and coloured pencils, and join in if you fancy it. Not a teaching moment, just chatting and sketching. It'll be fun.
Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the NEAC Annual Exhibition.

Painting of a Dancer | Demo with Julia Hawkins
Sunday 16 June, 1:30pm to 4:30pm
Join Julia Hawkins ROI NEAC in the gallery as she sketches a ballet dancer using pastels and then oils. Visitors will be encouraged to draw too, so don’t forget to bring your pencils and sketchbooks.
Julia Hawkins is a figurative artist based in Surrey, her modern impressionist style is well recognised and works are sought after by collectors both in the UK and internationally. A Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club, she is a regular exhibitor at the Mall Galleries as well as in private galleries. Her work has been selected for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize. Julia is as an experienced art teacher and in recent years has taught public courses at the Royal Academy, the St Ives School of Painting in Cornwall and the New English Art Club.

Exhibition Tours with Julie Held
Monday 17 June, 1pm and 3pm
Jule Held NEAC LG RWS will give guided tours of the exhibition throughout the afternoon.
Colour is central to Julie Held's practice, expressing the poignancy of her lifelong preoccupation with the powerful yet fragile cycle of life. She works with traditional materials – drawing and painting being the mainstay. Her working methods are various, including working from memory and imagination, the basis of which is drawn from things observed. She studied at Camberwell College of Arts and the Royal Academy Schools, and she has exhibited widely in Europe.

Portrait Painting Demo with Daniel Shadbolt
Tuesday 18 June, 1:30pm to 4:30pm
Watch Daniel Shadbolt NEAC paint a portrait in the gallery.
Daniel is a painter of the human figure and still lives. He has received many prizes and awards including a Royal Drawing School prize, and The Bulldog Bursary from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He is a frequent exhibitor at the Mall Galleries and in 2016 was a finalist in the Lynn Painter-Stainers prize.

NEAC Annual Lecture: Gwen John by Alicia Foster
Tuesday 18 June, 6pm to 8pm
This year’s lecture will be given by Alicia Foster on the subject of Gwen John who exhibited with the NEAC between 1900 and 1911.
Alicia will delve into the fascinating story of this talented Welsh painter, exploring her unique style, influences and her life and career in London and Paris.
Dr Alicia Foster is an art historian, curator, and novelist. Her book ‘Gwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris’ is available now.
6pm: Doors
6.30pm: Lecture start
The event is free with gallery admission, which is £5 payable on the door, but you need to reserve a space.
Sketchbook Studies and Painting Demo with Robert E Wells
Wednesday 19 June, 11am to 4pm
An opportunity to join Robert E Wells NEAC RBA as he embarks on sketchbook studies and oil vignettes throughout the duration of the day.
Feel free to participate in the activities, or come along for a chat!
Robert E Wells is a Yorkshire-born artist, known for his cityscape paintings as well as rural landscapes and figurative works. He finds inspiration in the unusual aspects of everyday life, encouraging the viewer to create their own narrative interpretations of his often ambiguous and sometimes conflicting imagery. Member of the New English Art Club and the Royal Society British Artists, he regularly exhibits his work in solo shows. His book, Robert E. Wells In Perspective, was published in 2018.

Exhibition Tours and Demo with Clare Haward
Thursday 20 June, 11am and 2pm
Clare Haward NEAC will be in the gallery all day where she will be giving exhibition tours and sketching a still life.
Clare will do two tours of the exhibition, at 11am and 2pm. The remainder of the day she will be demonstrating her drawing processes and chatting about her work. Join her on one of the tours or just come and say hello.
Clare Haward is an artist based in South London. She teaches regular classes at Dulwich Art Group, with the Penn Studio School and Croydon Adult Learning. She has had several solo exhibitions, had work included in the Threadneedle Prize, the ING Discerning Eye and in 2015 was a contestant on Sky Arts 'Landscape Artist of the Year'. In 2018, Clare was awarded an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Scholarship, and elected a member of the NEAC in 2019. She studied at Camberwell College of Art, Leeds University and the Jerusalem Studio School.

Drawing and Watercolour Painting Demo with Neil Pittaway
Friday 21 June, 11am to 4pm
Watercolour painting demonstration: 11am to 1pm
Drawing demonstration and talk: 2pm to 4pm
Neil Pittaway NEAC RWS RE LFA will be in the gallery all day where he will demonstrate how he creates different interpretations of places and landscapes from his many travels and chosen subject matter.
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and to talk to Neil about his work.
Neil Pittaway was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1973. He studied at Cheltenham School of Art from 1993-96, the University of Bradford from 1996-1998, the Royal Academy Schools, London, 1998-2001 and the University of Huddersfield, 2003-04. Neil is a Member of the New English Art Club (NEAC), the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE), Associate Member of the Alpine Club, London, and an exhibiting Member of Leeds Fine Artists (LFA).
