Watching from the shore on a glorious late September afternoon. The end of the day's racing events. Started the first sketch using pencil and fine liners. Later the same day whilst the imagery was still fresh in my mind I produced the colour sketch.
New Grimsby, Isles of Scilly
I hardly ever miss up the chance to sit and draw. I had some tubes of gouache but no water. But seawater sufficed, for the beach I mixed in sand and this added texture.
Recording a bright day, lots of activity mostly gulls. So much detail to remember, therefore many of my own supporting photo images. Back home in my studio developing rough ideas for a linocut. Applying and layering papers for collage backgrounds. Also design thoughts for tone and pattern.
Pin Mill, Suffolk
Early morning before the barge match. Moored barges preparing for the day. Afternoon of the same day. End of the match and back moored in the River Orwell. Many small yachts out for a sail drawn whilst on board SB Thistle. Looking at the barges then by moonlight allowed this sketch to give me the idea for painting.
This sketch resulted from a calm cross Channel passage on ex Brixham sailing trawler ‘Leader’ looking at and drawing the workings of an old windlass. Very smooth sea. Did not need to be tied to the mast like JMWT did supposedly.
Tall ships in port. I often try and find a quiet place to draw especially midst the hubbub of a major event. I also need to know that I can remain in the same location for a good while. The second sketch was started in the evening as the sunset. The sky was darkening and lights came on. Eventually too dark to continue. So back to the hotel to finish. It was easier to use gouache and watercolour then to complete the sketch.
