Tim Benson, President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, reflects on the special theme within this year's ROI Annual Exhibition
"This year’s theme of ‘Reflections’ gave both ROI members and non-members an opportunity to explore in paint a word that could be interpreted in many different ways. It really was a chance to see a broad range of artistic responses during a year that has left everybody reflecting on the direction that society is heading. And I was not disappointed; from anxious self-portraits to gleaming artefacts of a bygone era; from a deeply personal recollection of a long-lost relative to the semi-abstracted shapes of passers-by mirrored in wet Trafalgar Square flagstones, the works on show intimately explore the theme and leave me in no doubt that interpretive and thoughtful painting is alive and kicking in 2020" - Tim Benson, President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI)
