Taking an investigative approach to her practice, Alice White uses the processes of painting and drawing to explore the natural world. Her aim is to provide an artistic perspective into the traditionally inaccessible field of marine science, with particular emphasis on rare species and current conservation concerns.
“Sketching, drawing and painting are all equally important elements of my studio practice. I sketch on a daily basis, often repeating studies of certain creatures until I have reached an understanding of their particular forms. When drawing, I seek a clear, vigorous line, pure and unadulterated by paint. However, when a single animal form starts to fight its' way through all my other visual source material, I take to my easel, and explode all the gestural mark-making, colours and descriptive techniques which I've been exploring through my sketches onto the canvas surface. I see the canvas itself as a window into a fascinating underwater landscape, full of texture, luminosity and movement.”
