Antonia Phillips SWLA
Lively, atmospheric seascapes and landscapes – interpretations of where land meets sea.
Antonia is a well-known and established Dorset Artist, now based in Bridport.
As a full member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, she exhibits annually at Mall Galleries in London as well as other galleries and exhibition venues throughout the year.
Work is informed by coastlines and the fringes of land; created largely in the studio, working from memory and sketches. Intense light and mood of water, bird shapes and trails as usual starting points...
Monoprinting techniques explore ways to represent seascapes along Dorset coastlines by looking beyond the landscape and seeking out the energy of coastal forms.
More recently, woodland landscape and rushing streams have been an inspiration and a diversion!
Antonia works mostly in acrylic, always drawn to working up thin layers of paint. Initial sketches made and considered, before priming board or canvas heavily with a coarse brush, which will show through the layers of thin acrylic applied with finer brushes.
Antonia sometimes uses coloured pencil to add to the ‘scratchy’ movement.
Enjoying wild seas, wherever they are, she usually has several paintings on the go at one time; some happen quickly, some take longer.
A monoprint is unique – a one off impression created using linseed oil based printing inks by first moving the ink around on a sheet of Perspex or glass using coarse brushes, toothbrush, knife etc. The image or ‘painting’ is then created in reverse on the Perspex. A layer of paper is put over the artwork and pressed down using fingers, a palette knife and/or other implements. Re-inking may happen, or not.
There are a number of ways to produce a monoprint, this is just one…
Monoprints are about experimentation and these, in particular, have further developed my interest in the Dorset landscape and are more about seeking out coastal forms and the feeling of the place.
