Bill Prickett SWLA

Statement

Bill has been working as a full time sculptor for approximately 18 years. He produces much of his original sculpture in wood. His in-depth knowledge and love of wildlife comes from a life spent working with and studying animals. From volunteering with the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii to tracking gorillas in the Congo (and much in between) Bill's encounters with wildlife and the natural world have always been his motivation, and will continue to inspire his work.

Methodology

Bill always starts by gathering as much reference material as possible that relates not only to the appearance, but also to the behavioural traits and the way the subject moves. He will then produce a maquette from plasticine or clay with which he can "thrash out" the details of pose and general appearance. If a bronze is to be the end result, Bill will produce a refined version of the maquette from clay, plasticine, wood or wax (depending on the type of surface texture and level of detail that is wanted) and this will be taken to the foundry for casting. Alternatively, if a "one off", wooden original is desired, Bill will select wood that is most sympathetic to the piece and will then use the maquette to assist in the carving process.
