Statement

The composition and design of my paintings are important to me, as well as how the play of light and colour influences the mood and atmosphere of the subject. I enjoy capturing the personality of my subjects and this is reflected in the still lives, landscapes and portraits that I do.

Methodology

I am a figurative painter who produces work in oil and acrylic on canvas. Often I may work on more than one picture at a time, and this depends on the light or the subject matter. Sometimes I need to leave a painting for a while, so that when I return to it I can see the work with a fresh eye to continue with it.I use photographs, that I have taken, for ideas and as a preparatory stage for certain subjects, mainly for the composition of my paintings. I will then draw them up before beginning work. For my still lives I work from observing the subject, painting straight onto the canvas. For portraiture I prefer to get to know and get an understanding of, not only the person, but also how the client wants to be portrayed. I then do some initial sketches and note taking as well as take photographs. In the studio I will then set out the painting and block in the main parts of it. When this is done I will need to work from life to make sure that I get the essence of the character of the sitter. A commission undertaken will usually take between four and six weeks, depending on the size and nature of its requirements. I have a strong interest in encouraging young artists and have been involved with the selection of work for the Royal Society of British Artists National Students Exhibition in partnership with the Astor College for Arts in Dover, which is held during the annual RBA Exhibition.
