I am drawn to collagraph as a way of exploring the tonalities and textures which are achievable through intaglio printmaking. Landscape is the primary theme of my work. Memory and the interpretation of the past allows me to re-construct a visual representation of place.
It is through these investigations that my current work has led me on to a further investigation in colour, specifically the effects of singular monochromatic tone.
I start by gathering different materials to use on the plate, such as string, cotton and hessian, anything with texture. Then I think of the composition and try to imagine how it would look in terms of which areas will have ink and which will be rubbed away. I then ink up the plate and run it through my press. Each print taken off the plate will have different results, as all will have different degrees of ink on. I like this, as it makes them all unique.
I have recently been using a limited colour palette, just one or two colours. My early collagraph's were just black and white, no colour at all except for the cream paper I printed them on. That was because my main focus was to have a sense of melancholy in the landscape. I wanted dramatic clouds and dark skies and a lot of emotion. I still want that now, yet I feel there is more depth to them with a small selective amount of colour, resulting from the different layers it brings. It also helps me to explore different ways in which to use light.
