People being the most interesting of subjects, I have always sought to paint them in their setting, creating as much of their personal atmosphere thereby, and discovering ever new and and exciting colour schemes. Other subject matter challenges me in a very similar way. Illusion, tone and colour relations speak volumes.
I was fortunate to study in the “fifties” and to be taught by one of the most outstanding draughtsmen of the century in a college where there was great emphasis on understanding and explaining the structure of the forms represented. Mostly, I use oil paint on canvas or panel and work directly from life. Where possible. I make studies in pencil, wash, chalks, pastel or oils; later working the information thus recorded into the painting. When I have to work away from life on the final painting, sometimes I am forced to use photographs particularly for details such as folds in clothing. Aspects of a painting can be pieced together from many sources and I never just copy a single photo but use it amongst other sources. I use hog bristle and sable brushes appropriate for the job in hand. Client interaction in commissioned portraits is often an added stimulus.
