'I do not live by a rigid set of rules, but i do find myself painting a good eight hours on most days, although travel is the key for me'. Creating light, mood, atmosphere and emotion is everything. In the words of Cezanne - 'A work that did not begin in emotion is not art'.
Douglas Gray was born in Harrogate in 1965. He began his professional artistic career in the study of illustration, enjoying significant success over a 20 year period with clients including Saatchi and Saatchi, Warner Brothers and Universal Studios.
Preferring to concentrate on oil painting Douglas now specialises in marine and contemporary cityscapes. In 2013 he was elected full member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and has won the prestigious Winsor & Newton "Best Oil Painting" award 2011 and Rusell & Chapple award 2012 and 2013. His skill for reflection and movement on water recently attracted a commission from the iconic Savoy Hotel in London, where his painting is now on permanent display. His growing number of international collectors are also drawn to his unique ability to align vision, thought and emotion through a combination of both direct and loose brushstrokes.
Douglas is a regular exhibitor at Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and has already acquired an impressive array of both solo and group exhibitions.
Collector's of Douglas's work include The Right Honourable William Hague, the Howard de Walden family and The Savoy Hotel ('Fairmont Group').

Douglas welcomes commissioned work and particularly enjoys projects that strongly focus on light and atmosphere. His tendency is towards figurative painting and cityscapes. The artist likes to work closely with his client during the initial stages of a project and is also happy to make amendments to commissioned pieces, though less happy to amend non-commissioned paintings. Douglas relishes opportunities to travel for his commissions both nationally and internationally, but will also work from photos or reference material as a last resort. The time required to complete a work can vary depending on its complexity and size. The artist enjoys the variety of using a range of canvas sizes.
