Jeremy Barlow ROI (1945 - 2020)

Statement

Jeremy Barlow was an inveterate traveller. His inspiration came primarily from architecture, sun, shadows, texture, light, and atmosphere. He enjoyed the challenges of perspective and composition.

He painted in oil, acrylic, and watercolour. In his early days Jeremy was inspired and encouraged by the British landscape painter Stanley Orchart.

Methodology

Jeremy painted in oils, acrylic and watercolours. He painted on gesso primed boards using brushes. On his journeys, he started as many as 50 or 60 paintings per trip in varying sizes depending on subject matter. Jeremy sometimes did intricate drawings overlaid with blocks of colour and tone, usually in acrylic. At other times, he made simple tonal sketches using a brush and diluted acrylic. These ‘starts’ were brought back to the studio, where they were worked on, over a period of time, to the point of a finished painting. He enjoyed working out in the field and used photographs as a reference in some cases.
