Judith Gardner RBA NEAC

Statement

Gardner lives in Sandwich, Kent. The subject matter for her paintings is drawn mainly from the Kent countryside and the sea as well as her garden.

She paints mainly in oils from drawings and oil sketches made in situ and completing the work in her studio. She also works larger paintings from memory and imagination.

Methodology

Gardner’s painting is, to a certain extent, representational. It begins with ideas and sketches based on strong observation. Once the composition has been decided upon, the reality is not so necessary for her to develop the painting. This enables her to create the light and atmosphere with tone, colour and brushwork.

Strong shapes are worked with large brushes and rags and she finally tightens up on certain areas where she wants more detail and focus. For this she use smaller brushes and a rigger for the final drawing and mark making.

Bio

Gardner was born in Welling Kent in 1952.

She studied at Maidstone College of Art in Kent where she gained a BA Honours degree in Fine Art.

Whilst at college she was awarded the David Murrey Scholarship for landscape painting in 1974.

After leaving college Judith taught drawing and painting at Adult Education Centres in Kent and later in Windsor. Here she also taught ‘A’ level and GCSE Art and drawing and painting for the BTEC Design and Display course.

In 1998 Gardner moved back to Kent to paint full time.
