I love to paint water, trying to capture light, movement, reflections, and shadows. My favourite subjects include old dinghies and boats, Venetian buildings with their canal reflections, and waves. I am strongly drawn to watery themes.
I paint in oils, both in my studio and en-plein air.
I sketch from life, use my own photographic reference, paint plein-air and in my studio.
When painting plein-air, my work is generally smaller in size. When painting in the studio, much of my work is alla prima, but larger works will be completed over a few successive days. For watery effects, I will often thin the oil paint, and build layers of translucent colour.
I work on gessoed board, canvas board, and canvas. Smaller works tend to be on board, prepared with 2 layers of gesso, and a thin coat of oil paint in a neutral colour and mid tone. I work both directly onto gessoed white canvas or prime it with a coat of mid tone oil paint.
When life drawing I usually work with willow charcoal.
