About Paul Banning RI RSMA

Profile

Artist details

Artist's Statement

Paul Banning is a traditional watercolourist specialising in painting plein air. Paul paints in all weathers, although when this is not possible, he does work in the studio from his own sketches made on site with back up photographs. Paul prefers to only paint a subject that he has actually experienced.

Method of Working

Paul is a traditional watercolour painter primarily using watercolours. He paints on handmade watercolour paper made by Two Rivers.

Paul's method of working involves many thin glazes of transparent paint, which gives a great sense of both colour and depth to the painting. He will often apply as many as 20 layers of paint before the work is completed.

As a plein air painter, if Paul can finish a work on site he will do so. However, sketching is an excellent way of gathering material. Paul does also take a photograph of most of the subjects that he paints, at the start and finish of the work.

The artist often has many works on the go, and switches from oils to watercolours without a problem. With oils he often gathers material with a small pochade box, producing 8”x10” small works that are then a base for development into finished, bigger pictures.
