'PAINTING IS THE SOUL OF MY UNIVERSE, GIVES WINGS TO MY SPIRIT, COMFORT IN MY SORROW, AND IS MY REASON TO LOVE' .
I work most often in oils, on canvas or board, although I dabble in watercolours and mixed media. My style is figurative/ impressionistic, and light is very important for me, I am inspired by the 'illuminists' such as Joaquin Sorolla. I paint both in my studio from photographs and also 'au plein air', taking my easel outside to paint from nature. My objective- to infuse my works with both light and life, create figures from two dots of paint, for my viewers to feel the emotion of the characters, to be able to enter into the scene themselves, to smell the scents of the markets, feel the dust, the heat, hear the waves, to be there.
Rachid was born in the former Spanish colony of Sidi Ifni in Morocco, opposite the Canary Islands. He started painting at the age of four, being inspired by the souks, or local markets that his grandmother used to take him to as a child. He studied Fine Art in Tetuan in Morocco, and later did a Fine Arts degree at the University of Granada in Spain. Although he is now based in London, he spends a part of each year in the south of Spain where he has a studio, and still enjoys painting scenes and characters from his homeland. He is very versatile in his subject matter- landscapes, seascapes, portraits, animals, all in his signature style which is a blend of figurative and impressionistic. His talent is to bring life to his characters and scenes, creating atmosphere in the hope that the viewer of his work can 'enter' into the scene, identify with the personalities going about their daily work. Recently he has branched out into a more impressionistic style and is constantly experimenting with new tecniques and subject matter. he says he needs to feel an emotional connection with a character or place in order to paint it, to bring it alive on his canvas. In 2009 he was awarded the Creativity award by the government of China at ' Art Fusion Beijing' , has been selected to exhibit twice with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and and has been shortlisted in 2015 and 2016 for a number of important awards and exhibitions including the Columbia Threadneedle, Dubai International Emerging Artist Award and the Ashhurst Emerging Artist Award in London. He is very ambitious and hopes to exhibit in all the major art capitals of the world.
