Nature, in all her moods and beauty is Steven's muse. By painting her land and seascapes, attentive to her detail, of her flora and fauna, of her seasons and hours of the day and of her variations in climate and weather and through her form and colour, light and shade, Steven strives to understand her and convey her beauties.
Although watercolour is his main medium, Steven also works in gouache, pastel, acrylic and occasionally oils. He uses mainly Winsor & Newton watercolours, their series 7 Sable brushes on 140lb Saunders Waterford watercolour paper, which he stretches. Steven works mainly in the studio since his work is quite labour intensive. Careful drawing thus underpins his work. Drawing outdoors, in his sketchbooks, is an entirely different discipline and serves to remind him of time and place and helps to decipher the myriad of photographs he takes as reference material in the studio. Even though his work is often highly detailed, the success or failure of a piece rests not on that, but more importantly on the abstract qualities and the composition of each painting. These qualities, often overlooked by the spectator as he zeros in on the detail, are essential to his enjoyment of the painting and ultimately are the true test of its success.
