David Brammeld RBA PS is showing a collection of his Treescapes in the ‘Inspired by Trees’ section of the Royal Society of British Artists 303rd Annual Exhibition.

He will accompany this with a demonstration of his techniques in creating Treescapes in Graphite on Saturday 22 February, 1pm to 3pm in the main gallery space.

Here he gives us a sneak preview:

“I work in two subject areas: Urban Landscape and Natural Landscape, and I like to move from one to the other, in the same way that one may wish to escape the city and explore the countryside. 

So for me, the inspiration for my treescapes starts with such an escape to the country, where I stretch my legs and eyes and wonder at the amazing structures of trees. I regard them as ‘characters’ and my response is to collect and develop images through sketching and photos and translate these into my chosen medium: acrylic, pastel or graphite. 

For me, trees offer a lifetime’s worth of study, variety and interest. I really enjoy sketching for its own sake... such an enjoyable thing to do.”

Art Inspired by Trees

The Royal Society of British Artists highlights the potent inspiration trees provide for artists in its annual exhibition, 20 to 29 February.

Two clusters of tree images showcase a wide variety of styles, locations and moods, in highlighted sections of the show which overall features more than 500 works on myriad subjects.  Trees captivate artists and fascinate the viewer with their life-force, symbolism and extraordinary architectural variety and beauty.

Some works featured are portraits of individual trees, such as Mark Welland’s Reach for the Sky II, which is part of a series commemorating a 300-year-old oak tree finally felled by storm Katie in 2016; other scenes show woodlands, trees on the horizon or trees in the garden offering shelter on a sunny day.

Urban life also features. Melissa Scott-Miller RBA RP NEAC, known for depicting London’s streets, says of the capital’s trees: “In London the trees are often restricted by the buildings and paving slabs, but they have still kept going, their branches making beautiful patterns and shapes, the lichen on the bark has spread on to the rooftops and brickwork, in summer the canopy of leaves produce areas of shade, and they are a haven for wildlife, birds, squirrels, even domestic cats; the changes of colour and shape they display through the seasons lift the spirits, trees are essential to city living!”

Environmental themes emerge strongly. While many of these paintings of trees suggest at themes of longevity, ideas of mortality and the fragility of the environment are never far away. Gary Cook’s watercolour 1058: Melbury Beacon No 8 stands as a record of the 1,058 UK species associated with ash trees, ranging from beetles to birds, lichens to mammals. Some of these species are written into the background. All will be affected when we lose up to 90% of the UK’s 70 million ash trees from dieback disease. Of the 1,058 species, 40 of them live only on ash trees. The Centre Barred Sallow moth is one of those 40. Research is ongoing into replanting these trees with ash bred with tolerance to the infection.

Cheryl Culver PPPS RBA suggests we should all try our hand at drawing trees: “Trees are great to draw and as long as they get thinner as they go up and the branches get skinnier as they reach out, then even the simplest scribble can be a tree."

Alongside the exhibition, member artists will be demonstrating their techniques and there are a number of opportunities to join in; including a free drawing session where you will be serenaded by Classical Harpist Eleanor Dunsdon.

A Table at Seven

A Table at Seven depicts a dining room, in which seven vases sit upon a table containing flowers picked from a fictional garden. This fictional garden is illustrated in each vase and the seven of them tell a unique story. However I’ve never really told the story aloud as I’ve enjoyed letting the audience create their own narrative whilst viewing the work.

Escapade is worked in pure soft pastel on Pastelmat. I have used versions of the primary colours to create a childlike sense of adventure and mischief.  I like the idea of pattern and order being disrupted giving me as an adult the freedom to play with shape, colour and composition.

A portrait of my feelings of wonder of something that comes from another world - under the sea. Seaweed is both familiar and alien; strange in its texture and upon closer inspection, astonishingly beautiful in variants of colour, with glowing reds and golden tones like tongues of fire. Detail and colour become all-encompassing and fascination lies in where each strand starts or ends. What the subject matter is, becomes almost secondary to a celebration of natural colour and shape.

The Pastel Society Invited Artist: Mark Cazalet

Every year The Pastel Society invites a contemporary pastel artist they admire to exhibit alongside the members. This year they have invited Mark Cazalet who is exhibiting his piece Night Watch 3.

He tells us a little about his working methods:

“My images all start as encounters in front of nature, site-specific responses, each with their own peculiarities of light, spatial depth and atmosphere. I think of them as resonances, like waves in a ripple tank reflecting off the sides creating a dynamic gestalt movement across the surface of the paper.

Resonance is defined as the sound which is produced by an object when it vibrates at the same rate as the sound waves from another object.

Colour reverberates for me through the interaction of complementary effects, harmonies or in variation of intensity and tone. Colours placed adjacently are spatial, this depth is woven with the flat patterns of design.

To play with chromatics in this way is lyrical like setting a song or uttering a psalm. It can also be seen theologically as making a visible sign of inward transitions in perception, which are endlessly shifting and deepening. Andrew Marvell put it better in his 17th century poem The Garden, where our consciousness is transfigured by the power behind nature to a green thought in a green shade, an effect I aspire for my work to induce, similar to the sense of metanoia being a turning towards light.

I trained in Cornwall, then Paris and India on postgraduate scholarships. Each place changed my working processes and references and I am indebted to each specific environment I have lived in. Recently I had a five-week sabbatical in Kyoto drawing in the stroll and Zen gardens. The impact of this experience has yet to work its way out but another shift is coming.”

Night Watch 3 will be on display as part of The Pastel Society Annual Exhibition 2020 from 5 to 16 February.

Bob Last PS - The Pastel Society's Cover Artist

You can see Bob Last's abstract piece Squaring the Circle on the cover of The Pastel Society's exhibition catalogue, as well as on the walls of the gallery during the exhibition from 5 to 16 February.

Bob give us an insight into his working methods:

“I started using pastels after I retired and went back to life drawing – something I had not done since my student days. Over the years I have explored many subjects - landscapes, still life, abstracts and portraits – all of which I still enjoy doing.

However, recently I have changed my approach and like to stand in front of a blank canvas or board with no plan or formulated idea as to what I am going to do.

I work on board or MDF, which I prime with gesso, and add pumice powder to give a textured surface. I then just start making marks with charcoal. I like to think of this initial stage as charcoal scaffolding onto which I build shape and form with colour. I need to make marks to have something to respond to. Spaces left empty are as important to the design as what is drawn. I like to keep changing what I do and how I do it. This probably comes from working as a freelance designer for over 40 years. I constantly had to think up new ideas, be inventive and solve problems.

I feel working directly without any subject in mind allows the subconscious to take over and what results can be really interesting and often surprising.”

Bob is exhibiting four works in the exhibition. Another abstract piece Colour in Space, a semi abstract Flints from the Garden and a portrait of Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones

FBA Futures 2020 | Prizes & Awards

The Hottinger Prize

Tobi Alexandra Falade for her work Between Two Worlds and My Other.

Tobi's oil paintings and sculptural works explore the duality of her past and present, and her belief that a ‘shadow self’ continues to live on in Nigeria. Derived from found family photographs, and Falade’s own photographic images, and using collage and printmaking, the works uneasily conjoin two constantly merging and separating worlds, with the subject unable to fully identify with one or the other. Falade’s bronze work in the form of masks develops the idea of the shadow self by regenerating past histories in the contemporary diaspora through the Ife and Benin mask traditions of her Yoruba ancestors. Her painting Between Two Worlds has been purchased for the Höttinger collection, which includes contemporary art by artists exploring notions of family, trust, identity and home.

Ally Hunter, Director, Hottinger Capital Partners said, “Tobi’s artwork stood apart as being both original and incredibly powerful. We are thrilled that she will be the fourth recipient of the Hottinger Prize, and truly excited about how her creative practice will develop. In making this award, we are delighted to be supporting another art graduate from the outstanding showcase selected by the Federation of British Artists”.


The Minerva Prize

Lydia Blakeley Is This Internet Art (2)

The work is a series of eight small paintings based on a meme of Persian Cat Room Guardian (2013), an animal sculpture by Anya Boz, originally created to protect the home from negative energies. After the artist posted an image of the cat online it became – without her permission – a viral meme, captioned with text about annoying situations to which the cat appears to be reacting.

Marine Tanguy, judge for the Minerva Prize and founder of MT Art Agency said, “‘I was impressed by how Lydia Blakeley’s paintings reflect on the speed of contemporary consumer culture, whether it’s the excesses of the retail sector or online media, and the aspirations to change this. Lydia is a passionate, ambitious and visionary artist who deserves every success in her career.”

Introducing FBA Futures 2020

Mall Galleries is pleased to present the eighth edition of FBA Futures, the UK’s largest annual survey of emerging contemporary figurative art, mapping new practices and ideas of representation and draughtsmanship.

In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in figurative art emerging from British art schools and more generally in the wider art market. FBA Futures, as a survey of figurative art by new graduates, has been enriched and diversified by the way early-career artists are embracing and experimenting with the genre.

Within this agora of voices surface themes that stand out each year, illuminating the preoccupations of the next generation of artists. For example, bodies abound in this exhibition, and in the wake of the #MeToo movement, particularly so from female artists exploring their own through a feminist lens or challenging the male gaze in the history of painting. 

Amy Steel A Long Last Look

Amy Steel’s neolithic mound in Silbury Hill draws comparisons with the female body, and is shown being discussed by male archaeologists with their backs turned to it in an unconsulted dissection of its form and function. Nearby, Miranda Forrester’s translucent bodies painted on stretched plastic are drawn from a life drawing class for womxn of colour, a safe space to combat the fetishization of black women’s bodies.

As if to complement the Body, a theme of the Mind: a reoccurring thread of memory. Alex Clayton’s tapestries in a technique taught by a Finnish grandmother are the product of personal and collective memory. Seungwon Jung’s Rock, also tied in knots of yarn, traces the Earth’s geological memory, a vertical history, drawn from a digital archive.

Tobi Alexandra Falade unpacks her Yoruba, Nigerian and British histories: generational memory impacted by colonisation, migration and diaspora. Eleanor Watson’s tiny oils of objects from stately homes built on the wealth of the Empire confront ideas of nostalgia in British history and remind us that some histories require an active unforgetting.

FBA Futures 2020 is comprised of the artists who will go on to shape the future of figurative art and they will join seven previous years of rising stars whose work we see in museums and galleries around the country.
