Portrait vignette; a young woman looking over her shoulder.
The narrative of this piece grew as I painted it. I became drawn to the quality of the model’s gaze. I composed the vignette shape to echo the direction of her eyes, and I painted her as if she were breathing or about to speak.
The muted green of the model’s jumper and the freshness of her skin tones began to suggest to me an outdoor scene, beyond the borders of the picture. There was a distinct poignancy to this, as the piece was painted during the lockdown.
The whole came together with my longing for freedom and fresh air, to evoke the “Journey” of the title.
