This work is part of a series of paintings on the theme of the olive tree, which for me is an almost sacred tree, being so deeply embedded in the mythology, religion and landscape of the Mediterranean.
Although I seem to be drawn more and more towards abstraction, I find this painting, which is almost hyper-realistic, very exciting. Not just because there’s an olive tree involved (although the knobbly, sinewy trunk of an ancient olive tree is always mysterious and inviting), but because its surreal character excites the imagination. What kind of dialogue is the moon having with the tree? What is it telling us about the future? I love paintings that surprise me and make me think.Lewis McNaught, Mall Galleries' Director
