About the Artist
The Painting shows master tailor of 5 Savile Row guiding apprentice Sam Silvester on the art of coat making. I was invited by Kilgor to sketch their inhouse tailors at work in 2017. The workplace is situated below ground level and when walking down this busy central London street you may by chance see hunched backs over workbenches illuminated by incandescent light.
There is a flurry of movement where fine cloths pass through hands and then from benches onto mannequins. Even though taste in style changes over time, what this painting aims to show is that these skills of bespoke suit making are transferable.
There should always be a strong emphasis on apprenticeships today in the workplace. Only through this encouragement to learn as well as freely imparting a wealth of knowledge to the next generation can you keep this high quality of work going.
