We are looking for individuals who are passionate about art to join a group of young people who will explore artists’ studios, take part in creative interdisciplinary workshops, receive specialist mentoring, and collaborate to create their own group exhibition, responding to the fascinating theme of the Artist’s Studio.
Whether you’re a current student, art school graduate, a self-taught artist, or simply an art enthusiast, we’d love to hear from you. See ‘How to Apply’ below for more information.

What to expect from In the Studio
You’ll visit a range of artists in their studios to gain insight into the different stages of an artist’s career - from recent art graduates and emerging talent, to artists’ collectives and established members of the Federation of British Artists.
Through this project, you’ll discover what it’s really like to be a professional artist, beyond what we see and experience in a museum or gallery. You’ll engage with artists in the creative spaces where they research and create their work.
As a group, you’ll collaborate on projects, design your own events, and create a group exhibition to be held at Mall Galleries. To help you do this, you’ll receive creative input from external groups as well as artists working in different disciplines such as music and performance art. You will also have access to specialist mentoring support.
This project is offered free of charge to all participants. Mall Galleries will also provide the group with a wide range of art materials, as well as technical support from our team.
While we are not able to cover general travel expenses for each participant, we do have a travel budget to run a couple of studio visits outside London.
For the project’s pilot year, most of the events and studio visits will take place around the Greater London area. Applicants must, therefore, be able to travel to attend a couple of visits each term.
In the future, we hope to expand In the Studio to other regions of the UK, so if you are interested in the project but unable to travel, please get in touch and we will bear you in mind as In the Studio grows.
Events will take place from late 2018 until the end of 2019. Because the project is tailored to the individuals in the group, the schedule will take participants’ availability into account. All participants are asked to attend a Project Introduction Event.
How to Apply
To apply, simply email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with a short statement on why you would like to take part. Explain what you wish to get out of the experience, and how it would help you develop your own artistic practice.
Please include your age, where you are based, and at least two examples of artwork that you have created (via images, digital files or online links). These could be in any art form, including painting, sculpture, music, dance, performance, writing, photography, printmaking etc.
Individuals will then be invited for an informal chat at Mall Galleries before a final group is confirmed.
- Applications are open from 7 September to 28 September 2018
- The final group will be announced on Tuesday 16 October 2018
- The project will commence in November 2018
