NEAC Artist Scholarships

Early career artists are invited to apply for FREE to scholarships worth over £5,000. Submit before 28 April 2023.

The New English Art Club is delighted to invite early career artists aged 18 and over working in figurative painting, drawing or printmaking to apply for the NEAC Artist Scholarships.

What is the opportunity, and who is eligible?

The three scholarships are aimed at individuals who have not historically benefited from many opportunities to engage with the NEAC, and aim to support those who face financial barriers in pursuing the arts in a professional capacity. Early-career artists includes anyone who feels they are at the beginning stages of their professional artistic career, regardless of age. Applicants should be based in Great Britain.

The successful applicants will benefit from a scholarship prize to support artistic development, as well as having the opportunity to attend classes and develop mentoring relationships with the talented membership of the NEAC. It is hoped that successful applicants will continue to engage with the NEAC beyond the scholarship year.

One artist will be selected to receive a prize of £5,000, and a further two artists will receive £250 each.

The £5,000 award offers:

- £5,000 scholarship prize, paid in two instalments, to facilitate the artistic development of an early career artist

- A year of close mentorship with leading figures of the NEAC

- Free entry to all courses, classes and workshops run by the NEAC

- Work created during the scholarship year will be showcased in the NEAC Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries in 2024

The two £250 prizes offer:

- £250 scholarship prize

- A year of mentorship with leading figures of the NEAC

- Free entry to all courses, classes and workshops run by the NEAC

- Work created during the scholarship year will be showcased in the NEAC Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries in 2024

Past scholars speak highly of the experience, saying:

Leaving the comfort zone of my studio and daily habits, and allowing myself to try new experiences has been a great journey. Attending regular life drawing classes and workshops led by all different artists has taught me to experiment with various approaches and techniques. This has been a year of self-discovery, becoming a lot more confident and determined. The only negative aspect is that the journey has gone by way too fast!’ – Gabriella Marchini

Being granted the NEAC scholarship has felt a little like doing a self-directed MA in observational drawing. Through experimenting freely at the excellent life drawing classes, having the chance to work in other ways on the workshops as well as the encouragement received at the 1-1 mentoring sessions with NEAC artists, I have been able to investigate, reflect on my process and consolidate my work.’ – Beverley Isaacs

How to Apply

Applications to the scholarships are free of charge and should be submitted online. Following the close of submissions, applications will be assessed and shortlisted artists will be invited for a face-to-face interview at Mall Galleries. Successful artists will be notified of the final results by email, in time to attend an awards ceremony during the NEAC Annual Exhibition.

  • Applications are submitted through Google Forms using the link below. To complete the forms, you will need to be logged in to your Google account. If you do not have a Google account, you can create one for free using your existing email address. You do not need a Gmail address in order to create an account.
  • To begin, complete the NEAC Monitoring Form (The information provided on the monitoring form is strictly anonymous and will not be considered alongside your application. The purpose of the form is to capture a snapshot of the demographic mix of applicants. The NEAC’s aim is to attract a broad spectrum of artists as described in its equality and diversity policy and the results will help inform its outreach in the future. You may be asked to sign in to Google using your email, but this will not be recorded as part of the monitoring form).
  • Upon completing the monitoring form, a link is provided to the Application. The first questions on this form are name and email address, so everything from this point onwards is no longer anonymous and forms part of your application.
  • The Application invites an answer to the question, 'How will the scholarship benefit your practice and how do you plan to engage with the NEAC'? (maximum 350 words). The statement may be submitted as text, audio, or video. In addition, artists are asked to upload up to six example images of their work, ideally figurative painting, drawing, or printmaking (including the title and medium of each piece in its filename, for example 'Figure Study, Oil').
  • Shortlisted artists will be invited to show further examples of work and discuss the opportunity at an informal in-person interview with a panel of NEAC members at Mall Galleries. Travel expenses to interviews will be covered by the NEAC, up to the value of £150.
  • Selected artists will be notified thereafter, and invited to attend a public awards ceremony during the NEAC Annual Exhibition in June.
