Peter Murray, Director of the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, is a leading authority on twentieth century Irish painting and sculpture and will draw on aspects of the Crawford Art Gallery Collection to illustrate his survey of modern and contemporary Irish art.

This talk is part of The Art of a Nation exhibition.

This talk will look at the ‘Irishness’ of Irish Art and the influence that the wider European art world has had on Irish born artists. Throughout the 20th century graduates of Irish art schools often travelled to other European capitals to continue their studies, connecting Ireland’s artists to all the major art movements of the time.

Peter Murray studied Archaeology and History of Art at University College Dublin and is now Director of the Crawford Art Gallery, which houses a permanent collection of works from the 18th century to the present day.  The Gallery´s programming includes both Irish and international artists, reflecting the position of Ireland as a vital member of the EU and international community.
