"Here, the Isle of the Dead is encased within a computer module; rendered in a monochromatic grisaille palette. The materiality, brushwork and physicality of Böcklin’s original is lost. The computer module seen within the painting serves as a type of sensory ‘graveyard’ for the paintings of the past; referencing how our primary con- tact with written or pictorial content is through the barrier of a screen. We are engaging with a transcribed copy of the original."
