Artist Statement
The painting was inspired through looking at images of Silbury Hill, a Neolithic mound in Avebury. Man has made many attempts to understand the purpose of the neolithic mounds, yet its function remains mysterious.
The painting depicts the moment before an excavation into the mound. I saw many parallels between Silbury Hill and women's bodies and identities. The men stand around a maquette of the mound scrutinising and discussing its purpose whilst the actual mound is in the background: they have their backs turned from it.
