Learning to appreciate a slower pace of life over lockdowns is something that we have all had to face, and in the most part, enjoy rather than endure. Isolation has given many of us the gift of time to listen to the rhythm of our own bodies and minds and hopefully encourage ourselves to keep in tune with our own wellbeing as lockdown eases. This painting is a study of a quiet, private moment. The delicate mark-making and minimal amount of surface covered is inspired by drawing on paper. The peaceful space gives the figure room to breathe, which in turn invites the viewer to engage directly with the sitter, without any distraction. Frédéric is somewhere between intense thought and an almost meditative state, which is a place that many of us have hopefully had the luxury of exploring during lockdown.
