'Oracle' is the most recent in a series of paintings whose theme is transcendence mired in the carnal. These riff on the idea that however vaulting our spiritual aspirations, they cannot be untethered from our animal instincts. Like the other paintings in this series, it represents an effort to mash together polarities: synthetic and organic, religious and atheistic, cerebral and emotional and (dare I say it) Dionysian and Apollonian amongst others. I hope that the process is dialectic ie that the clash of the opposing elements produces an image that is greater than its constituent parts. In this painting the theme of transubstantiation - the conversion of the blood of Christ into wine during the Eucharist - allowed me to combine the carnal and transcendental in a way, which I hope has a forceful resonance.
