‘Rape fields always make my heart soar as I pass them by. This year, being one of the vulnerable because of my age and not having left the house for three months, I hadn’t been able to see any. But my son and daughter-in-law who know how I feel about them sent me a photograph from a weekend break in Surrey to cheer me up. I loved it and decided to paint it.  The rape field immediately spoke to me because it offered a feeling of hope amid the encircling gloom. It also had an air of tranquillity about it which I liked. All in all, this probably took me about ten hours spread over a couple of weeks. Even though we were in lockdown - this was in April - the weather outside was glorious. I hope my painting somehow benefitted from the great display nature was putting on through my window. It’s lovely to lose yourself in the business of painting, particularly at a time when life is full of so many restrictions.’

The colour contrast of the yellows and purples is striking, as is the sharp focus foreground with the very soft background sky.

I really like the warm yellow top layer and then the shadowy dusky world underneath.
