I was expecting to create a painting of the white cliffs near the studio. I had been exploring different views from the beaches between Dover and Deal, Kent. The structure at the base of the chalky cliffs is most interesting. It was a windy day on one of the walks near the base of the cliffs and the rock pipit landed at the base. It found a crevice to shelter from the wind and just sat there. From the initial sketches, I returned a few days later to try and find the place where it rested to create the composition. The cliff formation was as interesting as the small bird. The cliffs from a distance appear to be just white chalk but up close there are other remains with the chalk and sponges.
