My intention in this painting was to focus on the luminosity of Alice’s pale skin against the rich deep colours of her clothes and the green velvet chair.
Like my other painting in this exhibition, I painted this over several sessions in a friend’s studio with three other painters. What is remarkable to me is that the group painting experience yielded four such different versions of the shared reality of Alice sat peacefully in the chair.
In my version, I tried to keep planar changes and colour decisions as simple as I could without losing the sense of Alice’s form and the surrounding space altogether.
I added the brushes back in my studio later on, partly because they were right there, but also as a meditation on the role of colour in creating form in painting.
