Five miles from Cromer, Salthouse has a great beach, it's a very attractive, spare settlement. It has a kind of moated river before it and then a wide open aspect leading to the beaches. There's Cross Street and treasures of those understated pink-washed period cottages. It has a tea house and Cross Quays Café; a crab shop and an Inn, The Dun Cow. Then out of Salthouse on the breeze blown ocean front road. A rippling stream runs beside the road. Rambling, beautiful country. The dust tracks by the fields make mysterious markers in the landscape, Trees planted in clusters act as windbreaks on the open land, with reeds waving before them. The tracks across the marshes lead you to the sea's edge.
