I went off to the allotments on a roasting hot day in September, looking for a plot growing dahlias which I had painted last autumn. Sadly, no dahlias growing this year, but the allotments were full of sunflowers and they made a fantastic sight. I was especially taken with these dwarf sunflowers with their enormous flower heads! I've never seen any like them. I had a chat with the allotmenteer who grew them, and he dug up a lovely bunch of carrots for me.
At first, when I started painting I didn't know if I was going to be able to cope with the heat, but as usual once I got involved with the challenges of the painting my own discomfort melted away. There were so many butterflies the whole time I painted that I had to include them.
