Barn, New Jersey, USA
"I stumbled across this subject during a prolonged stay in the north-eastern United States, where I had learnt to appreciate the region’s many noble yet unregarded antique farm buildings. This New Jersey barn is perfect in its fragile solidity: a little battered but still in full working order, with a contrasting vertical and horizontal clapboarding whose time-worn curves and irregularities create a fascinating interplay of shadows cast by late-afternoon sunlight. Rust patches on the sliding-door gear—an industrial feature I’ve admired in places as far apart as New York City, America’s Deep South, County Cork in Ireland, and the markets of London’s East End—make an intriguing contrast with an otherwise blue-dominated palette."
