Earth Song 1 transcribes the emotional resonance of being deep in the woods - a place of sanctuary and renewal, and increasingly so during the pandemic.
Painted outdoors in November 2021, with hazel leaves still blazing in the trees, the ancient woodlands on Shotover Hill near Oxford are the source of the work, which includes notations of ambient sound, especially birdsong.
Contemporary abstraction emerges from the interplay between external cues - seen, heard and sensed subliminally - and improvised mark-making in response. And the work maps the intersection of the artist's inner and outer landscapes at the borders of language and sensory perception.
