This is a hard ground and aquatint etching of the staircase at The Grange, a dilapidated Palladian brick mansion in Hampshire. Once home to illustrious families, it fell into disrepair when the army occupied it during World War II. The house was saved from demolition in 1975 and is now the home of an opera company. Many years ago, I sang in the company and experienced its romantic charm while suffering damp dressing rooms, plaster falling from the ceiling, and mildewed costumes. The house in its present state reminded me of Eliot's poems, specifically Burnt Norton, in which the narrator reflects on time. I enjoyed exploring how far I could go with the inking up process to use two types of black in with various mixtures of plate oil to enhance the already dramatic shadows on the staircase.
