The wooden barque Garstang slips along the coast under full sail on a quiet moonlit night. She'll soon be well offshore, working the free winds to carry her to the opposite ends of the earth. The Garstang was built in Appledore in 1866 for owners in Fleetwood, sailing for many years in the Australian trade. She was typical of hundreds of the small, graceful deepwater men which carried Britain's goods around the coast and around the world in Victorian times.
