Cabo San Lucas lies at the very tip of the thousand-mile-long peninsula of Baja California. A jumble of weird rock formations marks the little bay where the fabled Manila Galleons once called in for water after their long and gruelling passage across the vast Pacific. These sturdy and often overloaded ships maintained a link between Acapulco in Mexico and the Philippines for some 250 years. They were in my mind when, as a young AB in a big steel schooner, we called in to water there in 1966.
