"Over a five-week Christmas period in 2017, a goose, shot by accident when flying over the Estuary outside my window, hung cruciform between two easels in the studio. I made both a day and night goose portrait and this set me looking afresh at great crucifixion images. I have included a print of the Isenheim Grünewald in this latest self-portrait, where I manipulate the spatial design of my painting across three interlocking rectangles. The painting next to Grunewald in the rectangle of mirror space was made from a Rubens in the Wallace Collection, while I was studying at the Slade in the 1950s."
