"This portrait is painted entirely from life on the scale of life using only natural light. Employing the sight-size method, I was able to capture the model's proportions and likeness while still allowing for more expressive elements, such as the flow of light from forehead to chin. The deeper values in the background and clothing help focus the viewer's eys on the model's complexion and psychology. I chose to keep one earring entirely obscured in shadow to demonstrate the effect of light on different materials in different circumstances. For me, this portrait was less challenging than many others, while leaving me excited for more painting."
