Artist's Statement

Bert Wright finds the greatest inspiration to painting is to travel and paint outdoors in a variety of locations and seasons. Nothing is a greater challenge to an artist than to achieve a satisfactory painting in changing weather or tide conditions in the knowledge that a particular light effect is of a limited duration. The artist prefers to travel with limited art materials and paint with a limited palette. Bert feels strongly that a successful painting can only be achieved by experience, and that art books or videos can only give limited insight into the various techniques that have been developed by the published artist. Most successful artists have acquired their ability through trial and error and over time have developed their own unique handprint.

Method of Working

Bert works principally from life and aims to achieve a finished result in one sitting. He rarely uses a sketchbook. If working on location proves impossible, Bert is happy to work from photographs but prefers to take his own as this allows him to retain a mental image of the location. The artist does not offer tuition but is often approached while on location by members of the public interested in his painting process. Bert is careful to only use quality paints, brushes and paper as he believes that very good painting is almost impossible with cheap materials and that this is particularly true of watercolours.
