Artist's Statement

For Brian painting is about trying to re create atmosphere within the landscape.

“I try to paint with shapes placed into a composition maintaining my feel of just that fleeting glimpse around me with the hope of catching the feeling I saw at the time.

“I normally paint in close tones but have diversified recently after catching fleeting glances of the reflections in the waters of Venice.

“I succeed in my work when the viewer makes the picture....not me"

He believes that the sun and light is the main factor which reflects his love of the works of J.M.W. Turner.

Method of Working

On Location Brian nowadays uses pen with a watercolour wash on heavy duty cartridge paper, maintaining his love of drawing; "Drawing is essential and everything in Art" Although in the past pure watercolours and oil painting on location were more important.

Brian now works mainly in the studio with oils on his preferred Italian canvas covered boards. “Nearly everyday you look to produce that one sensation that says it all.... this does not happen but when it does not  is the encouragement to persevere, get better and try again. Out of this some good work is produced.”

Brian uses a combination of drawings and photographs to produce his paintings but "Creativity and imagination have played a large part of my life having worked in Architecture for over 30 years".

The paintings Brian normally are produced building up numerous thin coloured layers only adding thicker paint at the end, all brushwork and without the use of palette knives.

“Whatever I do I look to enjoy it. I never take painting too seriously so whether I succeed or not is somehow irrelevant. Painting  style and how I choose to depict a subject comes from careful planning but then just happens, or it does not, it does not matter".
