Inspiration is close at hand in Fiona Clucas' garden, a haven for plants and wildlife. The beautiful countryside around her at the head of Morecambe Bay also provides an unusual range of landscape and wildlife habitats. However, she still ventures further afield especially to the north, taking at least one intensive painting trip there each year. Sometimes her work might include a human element to convey the essential connection between people and nature.
Although on a large scale the interplay of light and colour is important in Fiona's pictures she tends to close in further to particular aspects of the landscape. This provides subject matter which at first might appear to be quite commonplace. However, when observed more closely she finds there is often great beauty in what might go unnoticed to the casual observer. Out in the field I tend to sketch using graphite, water soluble pencils and gouache on heavy water colour paper and sometimes tinted paper. Fiona works quickly to catch the fleeting wildlife and transient elements. Like many artists Fiona finds using colour seductive but she also loves the drama of working in black and white. In the studio she works up larger drawings using graphite sticks and powder. Her paintings in acrylic/mixed media painted on canvas and board are created using a process of building up different surfaces and textures, sometimes with impasto, sometimes printing and much layering of coloured washes
