Roger Dellar PS RI ROI ARSMA

Statement

Roger Dellar's enjoyment of painting is the process rather than the end result. It is about finding the subject and letting it emerge. He enjoys the surface created, the brushwork and the differences between lean & fat paint. He wants the painting to read from a distance as reality, but close up to be a series of marks. With composition, he likes this to emerge by looking for the spatial qualities of one shape creating an imbalance, and then being resolved by another. He likes to work with a limited palette adding a few brights for emphasis.

Methodology

Roger works both from life and in the studio, and uses one of the following: oil, pastel, watercolour or gouache. He uses a sketchbook for gaining the information if he is out and wishing to travel light. This can be my first means of understanding the subject. A large proportion of his work is created by painting a series of small oils on location and developing them later into larger, more considered pieces. Then in the studio, when working for an exhibition, Roger will work on several pieces in order not to become too precious, and thereby more critical. In the studio he often uses sketches and photography to gain his first idea, and not to copy but to interpret.
