Richard Allen is a contemporary fine artist who paints from drawings, photographs, and direct observation. The act of drawing, painting and, selecting personally meaningful subject matter is central to his practice. The familiar, the domestic, the heroic, the playful, and the sublime all form the focus of his trade. Recent work has been described as 'wonky, iconic intimism'.
Bio
Allen attended Central Saint Martins College (UAL) in London as a Fine Art (Painting) student, continuing his studies there at Masters level.
Scholarships, Awards, Prizes
Allen's work as an illustrator has resulted in several international accolades, including golds from the Association of Illustrators and the Society of Illustrators LA, and silver from the Society of Illustrators NY. In the UK, he has been commended by the V&A, receiving both the Illustration Prize in 2017, and the Award for Illustrated Journalism in 2019. What's more, he has worked with well-known clients from the New Yorker and The NY Times, to the most high-profie UK and US newspapers and magazines.
Exhibitions
Since 2013 he has exhibited at a number of UK shows including the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition; The Royal Society of Portrait Painters; Thompson's Gallery in London; the Bohun Gallery in Henley, and Twenty Twenty Gallery in Ludlow. He has had solo exhibitions at Petworth House, Petworth; Andelli Art, Wells; and The Lighthouse, Poole.
