Statement

I’m a professional artist living and working in Yorkshire. I paint primarily in oils tackling a variety of subjects including portraiture, still-life and landscape.

Over the years my work has become much looser in the handling of paint and drawing materials such as charcoal, creating works which are lively and sometimes verging on the semi-abstract.

My most recent work has seen a shift in process. I am currently reworking ‘plein air’ paintings up to 5 sessions, returning to the same outdoor location at the same time of day and in similar weather conditions. I feel dissatisfied with creating a painting in a single session, often striving to dig deeper into the subject.

I work exclusively from observation, studying nature’s light and form. I find that nature offers me an endless inspiration and the seasons have a real impact on my work and guide me to work on various subjects throughout the year.

I am influenced by many Artists from the past to the present, some of which include Monet, Cezanne, Albert Marquet and Ewan Uglow.

My work is currently held in private collections across the globe and I am represented by numerous galleries within the UK.

Methodology

My most recent work has seen a shift in process. I am currently reworking ‘plein air’ paintings up to 5 sessions, returning to the same outdoor location at the same time of day and in similar weather conditions. I feel dissatisfied with creating a painting in a single session, often striving to dig deeper into the subject, to ‘see’ rather than ‘look.

This recent shift in process has allowed me to scale up my work, creating paintings up to 1.5 metres in length.

I work exclusively from observation, studying nature’s light and form. I find that nature offers me an endless inspiration and the seasons have a real impact on my work and guide me to work on various subjects throughout the year.
