Andrew James RP NEAC

Statement

Everything around us is relevant for study. Inspiration and beauty resides in seeing things anew.

No concessions should be made for good taste.

Methodology

I primarily use brushes and knives to apply oils on canvas. I usually paint isolated objects: a tree, a paperclip, a face. This heightens the sense of our connection and isolation with the world around us.

I continuously add and subtract until a satisfactory outcome is achieved in my painting. A conclusion is often achieved after a period of time away from the work. I usually work on two or three paintings at any time.

I work from photographs, life and memory: All are equal. A work’s outcome is all that matters. My artwork can take from one hour through to many weeks, some remain unfinished.

Bio

Andrew James was born in Reading, Berkshire and is a self-taught artist.

From a very early age Andrew James shared a passion for art with his twin brother Paul. In 1987 he decided to pursue painting full time and at the age of 17 so he undertook a 10 year project to develop his work through self-directed study.

Winning the Carroll Foundation Award in 1998 helped bring his work to a much wider audience. Election to the RP followed four years later and established Andy fully as a portrait painter. Further exposure came from a successful appearance in BBC 1’s Star Portraits with Rolf Harris.

Andy is also a member of the New English Art Club.
