David Sawyer RBA

Statement

I would describe myself as a modern British Impressionist, working within the tradition of landscape painting. I am mainly interested in architectural subjects and the effect of light in revealing the nature of its structure and creating a mood or atmosphere. The subject matter I paint encompasses Mediterranean landscapes to London’s urban skyline.

Methodology

My principal medium is oil paint although I also use watercolour as a means of exploring ideas and making preparatory studies.Much of my work, at this time, is on a larger scale as it is increasingly more studio based, using drawings and photographic reference and occasionally small oil studies made in situ. Generally, I have 5-6 main paintings that I am working on in my studio at one time, as ideas and elements, that I am exploring, move between one piece to another. If I am unhappy with a picture, I will leave it untouched and unseen for a while. Usually on returning to it later, problems can be resolved seeing it in a fresh light.I work between a small studio space in London, where I formulate my ideas and a larger studio in South West France, where I generally paint my larger pictures.
