My great love is for watercolour. For me it embodies the perfect balance between freedom of expression and a disciplined approach to the realisation of an idea or a feeling. Most of my paintings are concerned with expressing the brighter and optimistic side of life, not its darker moments .
I rarely work from life, except when painting flowers. My watercolours are created from my imagination, visual and verbal association, and memory of things seen. Preparatory drawings are simple scribbles . I paint directly onto the paper, drawing with my brush - never pencil. Even though my work is largely figurative, I am always attempting to explore and express the abstract qualities of the medium. I do not believe in absolute rules - each painting dictates its own .
