Patrick Donovan specializes in marine and military subjects using watercolour, acrylic, pen, ink, and pencil. He lives near Dover and finds inspiration in watching the ever-changing panorama and shipping on both sides of the Channel. He devotes great effort to research for both historical and modern subjects in order to be as technically accurate as possible. Preparatory work finds him searching archives or armed with a sketchbook and camera on board a variety of coastal and deep-sea craft, including lifeboats and pilot cutters.

Patrick's repertoire is very broad, and includes marine subjects, seascapes and landscapes. He has extensive experience in painting harbour scenes, historical vessels and traditional studies of fishing craft and works from commercial photographs and his own research. Since accuracy is of particular concern to this artist, complex client briefs will pose no difficulties, and can be produced in 2-4 weeks. However the artist does not accept requests for replicas of earlier work.
