About Peter Cronin RSMA

Profile

Artist's Statement

Peter Cronin paints to immerse himself in and to record his feelings towards the natural word and the marks our presence has upon it. Peter is not presently interested in still life or flowers etc because the pull of the outdoors holds more thrill. He supposes, like most landscape artists, it’s the way the sun lights (or not as is often the case in South Wales) the landscape that fascinates him.

Peter loves the natural world; we despoil and disregard it far too easily. He loves to be out in all weathers.

The layperson may presume that painting is only the concern of the hand and eye, but like many artists who often work outdoors, Peter finds that his best work is produced when all the senses are fired up. It’s a form of hunting where a subject is spotted and time may be fleeting so ears, nose, eyes and feelings: everything goes into overdrive and within an hour it’s all over; gone, and either you’ve caught it or it has eluded you for another day.

Method of Working

Peter is mainly a watercolourist, on Arch and Waterford papers. He works with an overall wash to establish the lightest elements and then try to tease out the shapes with as few superimposed washes as possible, thus maintaining the luminosity of the medium.

In his oils Peter tries and works directly with an ‘alla prima’ approach.

Approach to Commissions:

Peter likes clear basic instructions but with some creative freedom over the finished painting. His subject area includes cliffs, harbours, venice, creeks and industrial shipping. It excludes children, beaches and historic shipping. He can work from life and from supplied photographs. Depending on gallery demands, it takes no more than one month from receipt of images to complete a painting.
